Why MacPaw is Building Eney, an AI Assistant – Explained by Oleksandr Kosovan
Oleksandr Kosovan published a blog post on MacPaw’s website explaining why the company is investing in building an AI assistant named Eney and how he envisions the future of software.
MacPaw also invites users to join the waitlist to be among the first to try it.

A Fragmented App Ecosystem
Software 3.0 marks a shift beyond traditional AI — where previous interactions with artificial intelligence were limited to chatting, and responsibility for taking action rested solely with the user. In this new era, AI becomes an autonomous co-creator, a creative partner — not just a tool.
Despite this shift, most of today’s services remain stuck in the 1.0 era. While chatting with ChatGPT may feel like talking to an intelligent person, the actual task execution still falls on the user. Assistants like Siri or Alexa can handle simple commands such as setting an alarm or sending a message — but they often fail to understand a person’s true intent, making interactions feel unnatural.
MacPaw envisions a future where AI assistants can effectively complete tasks in an intuitive, human-like way.
Eney: A New Kind of AI Assistant
To bridge the gap from just a tool to an autonomous partner, MacPaw’s team realized that what’s needed is a universal interface — one that simplifies workflows and allows for smooth transitions between apps.
That solution is Eney — the first-of-its-kind AI assistant that redefines how users interact with their computers. But calling it an “AI assistant” doesn’t fully capture what Eney is — or can become. The goal was not to create just another digital assistant, but to build something capable of understanding users on a deeper, more human level.
“I call Eney a ‘Computerbeing’ — an AI-powered companion with a distinct personality that transforms how people interact with their Mac by combining human-like intelligence with proactive task completion,” shares Oleksandr Kosovan.
Eney is being developed to simplify workflows and reduce the time and stress of using technology. Its universal interface removes the need for constant switching between applications.
“Eney is your digital co-creator. Its cheerful personality makes it easy to interact with; just tell Eney what task you’d like to complete and it’ll do the rest, helping you work faster, with less effort,” says Oleksandr.
What Eney Can Do

Eney is available as an OS extension for Macs — an intelligent assistant that resides on the desktop and responds to simple voice or text commands. Its capabilities are powered by built-in commands and a wide range of integrations, including native MacPaw apps and third-party services available through the Setapp platform. This allows users to accomplish more tasks in less time.
For instance, users can remove the background from an image with a straightforward command such as “Remove the background” or a similar phrase.
By managing small but repetitive tasks, Eney helps users maintain focus on their workflow without the need to constantly open individual applications.
Designed with security in mind, Eney never takes action without the user’s permission. It also utilizes LLMs to process as many tasks as possible directly on the device, ensuring privacy and delivering fast performance — even offline.
“But this is just the beginning. Our vision for Eney goes beyond executing simple tasks. We envision a future where traditional apps are a thing of the past. Interacting with various software will be reimagined through Eney, a single, universal interface personalized to each user’s preferences and flow,” Oleksandr Kosovan emphasizes.
From Products to a New Ecosystem
For over 17 years, MacPaw has improved the macOS and iOS experience through simple, beautifully designed tools. Products like CleanMyMac, CleanMyPhone, and Setapp reflect its mission to make device interactions easier for users.
“But today’s digital world is too fragmented. There are too many tools, too many subscriptions, and not enough truly personalized support. With deep roots in the Apple ecosystem and growing AI expertise, we saw an opportunity to help define what Software 3.0 can truly become,” Oleksandr Kosovan notes.
Eney is a significant step toward building a new ecosystem — where humans and machines work in symbiosis, communicate openly, and grow together. MacPaw began this journey with Setapp — a marketplace connecting independent developers and users through great software. Now, it is continuing that journey with Eney.

In the future, Eney will have a modular architecture — a system of “skills” that can be combined into complex, multi-step workflows. That means Eney will be able to turn a single user request into a whole chain of actions — no app switching required. Over time, through continuous interaction, it will offer increasingly accurate suggestions, and its personality will evolve.
“It’ll take a community to build the future we imagine. That’s why we are encouraging like-minded creators to join us in creating this new ecosystem. We’re committed to building a space where developers can contribute their skills, gain visibility, and be rewarded for their contributions — all while helping shape the future of intelligent, human-centered software,” Oleksandr Kosovan concludes.
