Boosting engagement in a productivity app with AI

Client: A health & wellness / habit-tracking app

Challenge:

  • High user churn: ~65% of users abandoned the app within the first month, especially around days 9–11 when initial motivation waned
  • Low goal achievement & personalization: Only ~23% of users met monthly goals; generic recommendation logic didn’t resonate
  • Performance bottlenecks: During morning peak use (7–9 AM), response time exceeded 8 seconds with >5,000 concurrent users
  • Underutilized behavioral data: The app collected rich user behavior metrics but lacked actionable insights or models to drive engagement

Solution: ZONE3000 led a modernization and AI enhancement program that included:

  • Re-architecting cloud infrastructure (AWS, auto-scaling) to handle peak loads efficiently
  • Building ML models for: Dynamic goal adjustment & personalized habit recommendations; Predicting optimal notification timing per user

Technology Used

  • Analytics & BI tools (e.g. Amazon QuickSight) for real-time insights

Results

  • 30-day retention increased from ~35% to 54%
  • Session duration rose from 4.5 to 5.8 minutes; habit completion rate grew from 45% to 68%
  • Goal achievement improved from 23% to 41%
  • Subscription conversion (premium) grew ~21%, largely through users hitting 30-day milestones
  • Performance gain: peak response times dropped from ~8 seconds to ~2 seconds; uptime improved to ~99.95%
