UI/UX Design for a Banking Application

About client

Our client is a financial company from the Middle East. They own a mobile application that gives users access to their bank accounts and allows them to electronically sign documents, as well as store and distribute them upon request.

Challenge

The client decided to hire banking UI designers from us after a recommendation from another client who was satisfied with the outcome of our cooperation and after seeing a few banking app UX/UI projects in our portfolio. The client approached QArea with the intent to update the banking app UI design and make it more user-friendly and appealing both for new and existing customers. Among the key requirements, the client listed:

  • Service accessibility
  • Responsiveness
  • Ease of use
  • Intuitive navigation
  • Data safety
  • Handy interface to minimize unintentional actions in the app

In terms of mobile banking UI design, we had to build the application’s logic that fits the strict standards set by the fintech industry. There were also some vital technical features: the app was designed to give users access to their bank accounts, store biometric documents, and allow users to display them for scanning if needed, as well as sign documents electronically and support Face & Touch ID technologies. The banking app design created by our team had to successfully combine modern design trends with the specific functional requirements set by the client.

Given that the client was located in a different time zone and had a busy schedule, we also had to make the most of any communication opportunities we’d get. Moreover, since the client already had a working solution with a loyal customer base, one of our main goals was to maintain a recognizable brand identity in the redesigned version of the product. With all of that in mind and with a clear understanding of the scope of work, we began implementing the solution.

Solutions

As it’s often the case with banking UI design projects, we started with a detailed review of the existing features of the application and listed all the possibilities to improve it in a detailed report. Specifically, our UI/UX design team suggested getting rid of unnecessary screens and design elements, simplifying the registration and login process, making the core functionality of the app more easily accessible, and minimizing the number of steps a user had to take to perform the desired action.

After presenting our list of possible improvements to the client and having them agree with pretty much everything we suggested, we started visualizing the future solution. We conducted thorough research of the competitors’ products and the mobile fintech market overall, as well as looked for relevant references that helped us communicate our vision to the client and make sure we were on the same page in terms of banking UX design.

Once we reached an agreement with the client regarding the design of the future app, we created a clickable prototype of the application for two mobile platforms, iOS and Android. The core functions that we were focusing on when working with the layout included biometric identification (face and fingerprint reading), electronic signing, document storage and distribution, and access to the user’s bank account. All these features are easily accessible right from the app’s home screen, as well as a personal profile of a user, which was exactly what we discussed with the client.

In order to maintain a recognizable identity and create a consistent experience for the existing users of the application, we made the decision not to radically change the look and feel of the application. Specifically, we kept the original colors, as well as fonts. The logic and navigation of the app underwent the most changes which ultimately benefited the solution greatly.

Results

The work on the project took approximately one month and involved two UI/UX designers from our side. The result of our work on this project is the high-quality digital design for the iOS and Android applications, from the user interface to the experiences it guides users through. Our client was fully satisfied with the outcome and went on to implement the suggested changes in the actual applications.
