How Ukraine’s Energy Company Expanded Big Data Analysis and Energy Trend Forecasting Capabilities
About the Company
The Energy Company of Ukraine (ECU), a state-owned entity established during the war without state assets or funding, has become a national leader in energy trading and supply. Serving strategic enterprises across Ukraine and importing electricity during shortages, ECU continuously adopts new technologies to improve operations and decision-making. To meet the growing need for detailed analytics and accurate forecasting, ECU partnered with Cloudfresh to implement a Google Cloud Platform (GCP) solution.
Challenge
ECU needed a centralized data warehouse to automate data collection and processing from diverse sources, including public websites and internal databases. A robust ETL orchestration was essential to reduce costs, ensure reliability, and enable real-time analytics and machine learning for energy trend forecasting.
Solution
Cloudfresh, a Google Cloud Premier Partner, designed a GCP-based solution integrating automation and observability:
- Data collection and orchestration: 20 API connectors and web scrapers, managed by Cloud Composer, automate data extraction and processing.
- Data transformation: Cloud Data Fusion streamlines ETL processes, preparing data for analysis in BigQuery.
- Analytics with BigQuery: BigQuery enables real-time analytics and scalable data storage, with future plans for ML-powered forecasts using BigQuery ML.
- System monitoring: Cloud Monitoring and Cloud Logging ensure full observability, with real-time issue detection.
Results
The GCP implementation delivered:
- Automated data collection from 20 sources, reducing manual effort.
- Optimized ETL processes and lower operational costs.
- Readiness for advanced analytics and ML-based forecasts.
- Complete system observability for reliable operations.
Future Plans
ECU aims to enhance its analytics capabilities with BigQuery ML and Looker for data visualization, further optimizing operations and decision-making.
