Achieving operational excellence through a multi-cloud management framework and automations

by UST

OUR CLIENT

This global energy leader operates across the entire oil and gas value chain, from exploration and production to refining and marketing. As part of its strategic shift toward sustainability, it is also actively investing in renewable energy and low-carbon technologies. It is headquartered in Western Europe and has a significant international presence, providing energy solutions globally. The company is committed to innovation, reducing emissions, and contributing to the energy transition while maintaining strong operational performance in its core businesses.

THE CHALLENGE

Lack of multi-cloud optimization strategy leads to costly and complex deployments

The company faced challenges deploying applications across AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud Platform (GCP) because it didn’t have a multi-cloud optimization strategy. The IT team struggled with fragmented decision-making to choose and assign workloads to the most suitable cloud provider for each application without a centralized mechanism for evaluating critical factors, such as cost, pricing model, tool integration, team expertise, etc. Also, development teams were stretched thin, managing diverse infrastructure as code (IaC) and configuration as code (CaC) frameworks, causing inefficiencies, delays, and errors. Furthermore, switching between providers amplified governance and security risks because each cloud’s compliance policies introduced additional hurdles.

THE TRANSFORMATION

Streamlined multi-cloud deployment framework enhances efficiency and reduces time-to-market

UST implemented a robust, cloud-agnostic framework to simplify and optimize multi-cloud management across AWS, Azure, and GCP. This solution addressed deployment inefficiencies and governance challenges while the application accelerated time-to-market. Key enhancements included:

  • A unified CI/CD pipeline—leveraging Azure DevOps to orchestrate a single, cloud-agnostic CI/CD process, enabling efficient environment management and quick infrastructure deployment across multiple cloud platforms
  • Infrastructure automation—utilizing Terraform for IaC and Ansible for CaC to automate workflows, ensure consistency, and minimize manual efforts
  • Modular architecture—thanks to reusable and adaptable components that streamlined development and deployment for diverse applications

This multifaceted transformation approach enabled the company to rapidly roll out new features, updates, and services seamlessly while maintaining governance and security across its multi-cloud ecosystem and ensuring reliability and consistency across all deployments.

THE IMPACT

Enhanced multi-cloud governance, efficiency, and cost management

The new modular, scalable architecture made the company’s infrastructure more flexible, robust, and secure, future-proofing operations for growth and expansion. Automating and centralizing cloud provider infrastructure deployment processes reduced human error while improving governance with consistent policies and standards and increasing visibility across the multi-cloud environment. Fewer manual processes reduced configuration mistakes, downtime, and security vulnerabilities. Automated IaC and CaC templates ensured environments were deployed consistently and reliably—every time—increasing operational efficiency, ensuring compliance, and streamlining audits. These improvements enhanced the company’s decision-making capabilities and its ability to manage multi-cloud environments effectively with a focus on resilience and cost-effectiveness.
